Customer Reviews: So so NAS/Media combinationJune 1, 2009 RoB(CA, USA) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Initial unit from Amazon turned out to be faulty but replaced unit worked straight out of the box. Thumbs up to Amazon for an excellent returns policy.
I have an existing N2100 from Thecus which has been rock solid for around 3 years and the reason I stuck with Thecus when upgrading. The M3800 as a NAS seems faultless and rock-solid in day to day use.
However the Media functionality of this box is solely lacking. The UI is nothing short of useless. The M3800 makes no attempt to warn you about playing incompatible files. It try's to play them and all of sudden will randomly exit. Try to play it again and it will exit at a totally different part of the playback. However play a file that meets the requirements then no issues and playback is fine. The remote bundled with the unit is as cheap and plastic-like as they come. If they ever do decide to update the UI and provide new features then the remote would be useless.
Due to the complete negative experience of media playback by this device I have relegated it to under the desk with the other NAS and simply use the MediaServer features of the box over my network and just stream to the PS3 who's media UI is light years ahead of what Thecus offers.

I have being waiting for this product to become available for quite sometimes now, since I am looking to simplify my home theater by using connection TV directly with NAS for a simple store and play process...
Now, i have a very clean and elegant way to keep and play all my DVD collection that I converted into digital files... Thanks Thecus!
BTW, as I said, I have being begging the Thecus USA to release the product, and only until a month ago I got the news it's finally available... so how does the first reviewer got the products for 3 months already? Strange!
Excellent Home Media NASDecember 30, 2008 Akuma 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just got my around X'mas, excellent home NAS with media support.
It has HDMI port which you can connect to you TV directly, and playback the media content stored inside. Best of all it comes with a remove control. Just like the way you play MP3, Video from you PC, but now you don't need a PC and can seat back on your sofa.
You do need to find a module from website for MP3 support though (which I found in Thecus wiki)
OSD_PLUS: This module add OSD file list with more file extensions
terrible stuffDecember 5, 2008 Nicolaos Chrysanthou(Greece) 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
After having this for 3 months I can say one thing, tt is very very very slooooooow. Added to that it started smoking one morning and thank god I was close to it as it would have burnt my house down. Added to all this the customer support at thecus just sent a 3 word email to the effect that I should talk to my seller. KEEP AWAY.
